I've very carefully tried not to blog during this election campaign. Firstly this is primarily a music blog, and I don't think music and politics mix *that* well [take note U2... leave it to the pros]

Also this is the first election where the televised debates have animated a whole lot more people, this is good and bad [good because it gets people talking, bad 'cos it becomes presidential and less about the candidate representing your borough in parliament] - now I don't want to seem bandwagon jumping. I've been interested in politics long before the ITV debate ;-).

Finally there's 4 people in this band and I in NO-WAY represent the views of all of us [in-fact, I don't think we've discussed what we think] so these are the views of me and not J-Treole in full.

In-short, this is my summary of the parties

Conservative

The years leading up to this, I was shitting myself that smug git David 'call me Dave'Cameron would get into power and I'd experience my first proper Tory government [John Major didn't count as I was too young, and I was living out of the country for Maggie Thatcher].

I disliked their policy on people starting their own schools, money will have to be withdrawn from the state system, and it further segregates people.

I think their £27billion efficiency saving plans is unrealistic. Average public sector wage is £25,000/year. So that's just over 1 million job losses. At a time when unemployment is on the rise this is something we could do without.

They want to cap immigration which is a load of crap IMO [especially when you give no figures]

Cameron is a Eurosceptic, not what we need when IMF will downgrade our economy, making British debt more expensive to insure. Who will we turn to then to borrow money?

Tax breaks for married couples is retrogressive and patronizing for about 20,000 reasons. I means about £3 a week and it costs £12million. How will this be funded please? It also encourages one couple to stay at home [bit of an old Tory ideal there?]

This whole national service at 16 is a load of crap, even if you get Michael Cain to back it. For the many consciences objectors this is movement against free-will, and for the 'obedient' majority [who this is not targeted at] this is tarring everybody with the same brush.

I'd love to see 'The Sun' and all the Murdoch press loose too :-)

Good points - Cameron attempts his Obama angle, digging change. This of curse would be a change from 13 years of Labour [most people my age have grown up with New Labour] Tories are now Centre Right so at least that isolated a whole load of core-vote; who have buggered off to UKIP.
Kenneth Clarke is heavy weight good Tory [even if you hated MT's cabinet] - he knows the numbers.

Bad Points - Both DC and George Osbourne [along with half of their party] are all ex-Etonian Oxford Grads. I think this is a marginal representation of the country. GO is not an experienced chancellor. Some of his MEPs are aligned with far-right European parties, not good. Dc also took a bit of convincing on the section 28 bill [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28] - c'mon it's 2010!

Lib Dems

Yes, they may only be involved in this discussion because of the TV debates, but perhaps this is the way forward? Maybe this should have happened 5 years ago, and perhaps we'd be moving towards a press-free vote? Maybe we should include Green, Respect, UKIP and BNP [and all the Scotish/Irish/Welsh ones too].

Clegg has caught the Zeitgeist of a lot of disenchanted Labor voters, classic liberals, students, Tory-haters and spanners who knows fuck-all about anything. But as Tesco say - every little helps?

Traditionally the Lib Dem vote has always been laughed at as 'wasted'. Well, perhaps now, in the first election where not only do you vote who you'd like Govern, but you can vote for who you'd like to loose - the Lib Dems actually hold the Key.

One thing against the Lib Dems is their lack of press representation. Murdoch press [especially 'The Sun'] have been ordered not to report on their affairs. More liberal centre right papers [The Times] have given them column inches, and The Independent [although technically not aligned] has reported on them. But does anybody take the Indie seriously? 'The Guardian' has also come out in support for them, shifting from Labour. This is a big deal in centre-left press - however this is a recent development.

They often get branded with a stigma of liberal drug policies, Europhiles, blah blah blah... but with staunch Labour and Tory support waning [I mean traditional Left/Right politics] perhaps Lib Dems are only representation of change?

Good Points - Clegg is obviously charismatic, and not quite as Blair-ite as Cameron. He comes across a genuine. Vince Cable [heralded as perhaps the best Chancellor this country has to offer] famously predicted the financial meltdown and has even won the support of Private Eye editor Ian Hislop.

Their support is impressive for a 'marginal' party - Charles Kennedy, Ming Campbell, Paddy Ashdown, Shirly Williams [of the gang-of-four Labour defectors] all reasonable people with good experience. They also came out of the expenses scandal a lot better than the two older parties.

Bad Points - coming under this level of scrutiny at such a late stage has perhaps made clear some gaps in their budget [un-accounted for something like 75% of their savings and cuts] but this is still a great deal more than the other two parties. Their pro-Euro dreams are perhaps a thorn in their side. Clegg also looks to be back-peddeling on some core liberal issues, like Trident.

Labour

Labor, Labour, Labour. Where to start? I always thought the last chance they had was the coo around Winter last year to try and oust David Milliband. When that failed I knew they'd lost it.

A party whose 'New' Labour alignment died when Tony Balir stepped down. A vision so poorly executed by Gordon Brown it's laughable. I mean, the guy isn't so bad. He knows his numbers, and was a good chancellor.

The guy is tired though. I know we shouldn't be promoting game-playing, but he's not the one for it. He's had it tough, and made too many silly mistakes. Do I trust him? Yes, but I don't think he is the guy to lead us our of recession.

With Labour too, there's a lot of voters they've let down. Traditional socialists were ditched in 1997 and have never been won back. Some white working classes have moved towards BNP, for this I think Labour is to blame. Unionists although grind the organ have been marginalized. Iraq and Afghanistan were a BIG deal to a lot of people [proved by Oona King loosing Bethnal Green and Bow to George Galloway] and I think their line has become more and more diluted.

Good points - Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling are good with the economy, and I think they've proved we need not go the route of Greece. Our credit rating is better and we still have a private sector making us plenty of money. They certainly have a lot of experience too. Mandelson and the likes have been in this game for a long time, and they know how to operate it.

Bad points - with a cabinet full of smug idiots like Ed Balls, Tessa Jowell and formally Stephen Byers - people associate this party with the levels of sleaze Major's 97 government. This they cannot shake off. Labour don't represent anyone really. I think people are really wanting something different.

One thing about all three parties is no-one seems to be clean about VAT rises, where the public sector cuts will come and likely-hood of coalition governments if parliament is indeed hung.

Lib-Lab? This would be a win for Centre Left but I think it would annoy anyone who voted Lib Dem because of Iraq et al. Lib-Con again would annoy people who hate David Cameron and would out-right [no-pun-intended] never vote Tory.

Only way out is a super cabinet, like a dream team...

Miles beyond be-bop...

Over the next series of these I’m going to look at some key idioms of jazz through the life of Miles Davis, however his is not a biography of him in anyway. Right at the beginning of his career, was bebop, so this is what we’ll look at first. Miles was by no means a key innovator in this era, but featured in, perhaps the quintessential bebop line-up. Davis came to New York in 1944ish, will bebop already in full-swing [excuse pun].

I wrote a small piece on bebop back in 2006 or so, the music fascinated me. It seemed so unreachable, on this pedestal above many other forms of music. Yes, bebop requires an almost virtuosic grasp of not only your instrument, but improvising and musicality in general, but is often approached from the wrong angle.

Some commons misconceptions about bebop is that it employs hugely difficult chords, bizarre comping patterns and widely ‘out’ melodic content. Some of this may be true in some cases, but we have to understand a bit about where bebop came from to analyze these facets.

The truth about bebop may be buried in the mists of time. With few to little of the key musicians being alive, it’s a combination of speculation and educated guesses. I wrote in my paper that it was partly a reaction to the growing popularity [and commercialisation] of Big Band and Swing. Which I think, in a sense is true. But bebop had to happen.

Players had started adding more and more inflections and articulation to the melodies, combos were getting smaller because of financial reasons [and organisation probably too]. Some key figures in were Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, George Shearing, Charlie Christian, Coleman Hawkins and Thelonious Monk. Monk himself, had perhaps the most instantly recognisable style, and, although he came from around the bebop era, his style for many years to come stood shoulders above other pianists.

Monk’s comping style was similar to that of stride pianists, but without the coy harmony they could sometimes portray. His truly understood the effect of the chromatic scale and utilized it well in his many compositions. His right hand was capable of delicate Ahmad Jamal like legato, but he could play the blues like Art Tatum. He was to many, a complete pianist.

Charlie Parker on the other hand, was a late starter. Apparently didn’t touch the Alto sax his mum saved up for him properly until his late teens. He was from Kansas, and this reflected in his rhythmic styles. He was nick-named bird, because of his flurried legato passages. Between himself and Dizzy, they probably defined more what bebop is than anyone else.

So let’s look at the key element and try to break them down. Bebop’s compositional styles were essentially based on taking old ‘changes’ and re-harmonizing them. Gershwin’s ‘I got rhythm’ was staple, most Broadway tunes with simple changes in-fact got the bebop treatment.

Here we can see in the first figure, Gershwin’s ‘rhythm changes’ and in the figure below, some simple substitutions. The VI chord can be changed for a diminished chord leading nicely between the I and ii. Also tri-tone substitutions were beginning to be employed, leading chromatically between chords. Here, C becomes Gb, D becomes Ab, G becomes Db and so on.

The comping patterns, often described as ‘hot’ in-fact were off-beat stabs, usually borrowing a lot from Latin music, which was beginning to have more and more effect on Jazz. On key factor or the comping style in the bebop era, is that the ensembles were much smaller, so duty was left to piano, bass and drums to deliver harmony and rhythm. In Big Band, you may have an entire brass section delivering chordal stabs, so it would have to have been notated too and guitar or piano would take off-beat stabs. Now the piano or guitar could improvise with both different rhythm patterns and extended harmonies.

Miles replaced Dizzy in Charlie Parker’s band. Here we see something that commonly happened in Jazz bands around this time, the band leader taking credit for others compositions. Charlie Parker is credited with the composition ‘Donna Lee’ although Jazz scholars widely accept it was probably a Miles Davis tune. Here, we can examine the melody of the first 8 bars to look at how bebop melodies were constructed.

The above figure is the first 8 bars of the aforementioned Donna Lee. A fairly simple pattern decorated with chromatic [often passing notes, rather than synthetic scales] triplets and other ornaments. The fact the rhythm section would be improvising over simple changes, meant there was greater harmonic material in-which to generate lead patterns. The horn section would play this in unison usually.

Next I’m going to look at Miles’ ‘Cool’ period, before getting onto the Modal stuff, then his Fusion in the 70s and ending with a surprise! More to come.

Just a few of the less obvious J-Treole influences. We're always working on fitting as much of what we like in, as Squarepusher said, [to paraphrase] it's about getting as much as you can in, from the 40s bebop, to the 70s funk, and 90s dnb, the lot!

Parliament, for me, summed up evolved funk sound, psychedelic, bass heavy, synth ridden, and most of all, fun. George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell are all massive influences on all of us in different ways. Get to know Parliament! They changed music for-ever! I think it was important for the idiom too, that it was around the first time funk became loud! James Brown invented the genr, but Parliament jacked it up to 11 [if you excuse the cliche] massive amounts of backing vocalists, marshal guitar amps, Moogs and the lot...

Squarepusher was a really early J-Treole influence, as he was someone taking Jazz in a different way. He played the bass like a bad-man, but had real good harmonic direction to his tunes, proper tunes. His break programming, today, remains un-paralelled, and he keeps shape-shifting, re-defining people's conceptions of him. J-Treole used to cover his Iambic 9-Poetry from the Ultravisitor album, he did a lot for us then, and he still does now.

I threw in this Ice Cube video, not only 'cos it's an awesome tune and features George Clinton, but it's from another time in Hip-Hop, when things were different, back to '93, when G-Funk ruled. Hip-Hop has had some damage done in recent years, but true greats live on. The likes of J-Dilla, Nas, Pete Rock, Doom, Madlib will be timeless, and always overshadow this current fad of Hip-Pop.

Dorian Concept was introduced to me by part-time J-Treole'er Simon Panrucker. This funky-ass glitch master, plays live keyboards [like I've never heard!] and has a free jazz drummer, as well as running ableton loops and doing the most bizzare sound design. All live, this is the key... he dosen't hide behind a laptop cue-ing tunes. He makes music... He's still up and coming, but he's going to make a big difference to a post-dilla scene. See him with the likes of Flying Lotus in terms of hall-of-fame.

Finally, another HUGE influence, mr Herbie Hancock himself. This video is of Chameleon. Amazing how the deepest funk his re-played entierly live! He rips up the Solina, Clavinet, Rhodes, Moog, he only has two hands! This album is a mile-stone in Jazz, Funk and music in general. Herbie did alot for mixing jazz with rock, electro and even drum'n'bass [argueably more than the great Miles Davis, who's last album was a Hip-Hop callaboration] Herbie's been there since early days, being featuired in Miles Davis' "2nd great ensemble" and being at the fore-front of alot of big music. Herbie also was one of the first people in jazz to use samplers [the farlight, youtube it...]

swine flu over

90 million swine flu doses ordered by the Government from GlaxoSmithKline @ £6 / dose in 2009. [That’s £540 million spent on something with little research.]

5 ¼ million actually diagnosed cases in this country. There £508 ½ million worth of the drug being stored now. What a waste! On top of that, I dread to think the needless strain on the NHS who had extra training and endless meetings and consultations about this, the services created money pumped into the service created or the time wasted!

Yet again another fear mongered pandemic blow out f proportion by tabloids, QUANGO fear campaigns, the GMC and everybody else. Next time something that supposedly threatens human existence comes along, let’s take a deep breath and have a look at bird flu, SARS, foot and mouth, CJD or any of the others.

GSK are partly to blame for the extortionate rate they charged the government [and developing it in Canada!] but the real criminal is Rupert Murdoch who’s empire made us believe only Robocop armed with 200 billion vaccines could save humanity from certain extinction.

Of course the government over ordered ‘cos if it hadn’t they would have been criticized for lack of foresight or negligence. Okay, I’m being sensationalist now, which is awful, but next time, can we please just be realistic, after initial exposure this had caused only a handful of deaths in mexico [of all places!] and less than 10 over here, where our awareness is heightened and medical care better.

Every time a virus , bacteria or parasite mutates, a much stronger ones mutates with it: humans! It’s not all doom and the end is nigh type shit.

THE FUTURE OF JAZZ [CIRCA 1950]

Not a lot of people know, that this guy [George Russell] actually inspired the greatest selling jazz album ever. His Lydian chromatic concept was read by Miles Davis [and others] after he'd ventured into his cool works. Jazz was changing from the days of simple changes where you'd improvise over certain chords [I VI ii V, or the likes]

Be-bop saw heavy extensions and alterations, with 'hot' syncopated comping and vastly dramatic scalic weavery by the solo-ists and composers. Cool saw the introduction of a softer side, exploring the sonority of instruments.

It was George Russell's book though, started Modal Jazz, which produced the best selling Jazz album of all time, Miles Davis' 'kind of blue'. The theory [briefly[ explores the conept of soloing with scales [horizontally] rather than dictated by changes [vertically] a concept previously not explored.

Miles David put together a band for a short session, only showing the musicians, sometimes, fragments of scales, no changes, not much direction. Bill Evan’s rich chordal explorations in Blue in Green, his quatral harmonies in So What [copied by everyone since] and beautiful floaty flamenco sketches, coupled with Miles’ gliding melodies, makes a timeless album.

This was a great band, and without the concept they would have produced an amazing album, but what is funny, is that it was a theoretical concept, that inspired Miles to gather these musicians. Only a young Coltrane, could have began to match Miles.

In short, Miles Davis has been there for the middle of be-bop, helped re-invent cool from a west-coast white thang, to a widely accepted, well documented mile-stone [no pun intended!] in jazz. He helped create modal, was a forefront of electric jazz fusion, and his last album was a venture into hip-hop when he died.

Making music with a difference

In the days of awesome-fast mac-books, USB toasters, firewire, tap-tempo, automation and the lot... music making can become a bit clinical. The danger of our 'control everything' environment, is that, given the choice, we can, and we will.

What does this mean though? Brian Eno said something on the subject [which for the live of me, I can't source] so I'll paraphrase:

When you were younger, and you had all these colors of plasticine, eventually after playing with them, they'd turn this browny-purple color. Which is a bit like how editing has become. You can go and change one drum fill, because it's only 90% there... then you can change another, and another, and the whole thing becomes one homogenized mass that has no human feel to it.

I was at the NAMM show and I saw people quantization and pitch-correcting vocals in the Melodyne booth. Yer, If you have a take that was 95% there, and there was one fuck up, I'd do it too, but the danger is loosing what makes music some intrinsically humanistic.

I've taken some time to think about what it is that *I* do in my music making that tries to step away from this. My music may not sound awesome, but I have fun doing it, and where possible, I try to do things others can't.

1/ playing through the whole thing, start to finish... so how many of use, grab a rhodes multi, knock up 3 or 4 chords, quantize, then loop to finish? You wouldn't even get away with this in minimal techno or crunk or some other mind-numbing genre! Quantizing is fine, so long as you don't quantize the whole thing... some human error is what makes records sound real. Anyone can quantize and loop, only you have your own 'feel'

2/ using external gear - this can be a throb with a small soundcard, but it's amazing how much of a difference it can make. i use a Korg Kaoss pad for delays, filters, phasers with changing LFOs etc. There's a cool array of guitar effects pedals I'll call apon 'cos you can synch the delay, or the filter cut-off has to be adjusted by hand. Automation's fine if you're doing really fine details, but leaving the filtering to live is the way fwd>> if you ask me. Ableton and all those programs have midi learn knobs, which is good, and better than drawing it, but leave it down to something real if you can.

3/ randomizes - okay this is grey matter. what I mean is stuff that syncs to your master clock and chops into 8ths/16ths etc and re-arranges. That's fine, but for fuck-sake - chop chop chop when is done! I tend to [when dealing with drums for example] knock up 16 bars with a few variations in, then add randomizes and export, each time tweaking some functions. And I use a few of them so you don't get used to the algorithm. Then bring them all back in and re-arrange to your heart's content. Then why not re-randomize? Keep your chops to 8th/16ths or even small, so it's *your* sound, not the computers.

4/ on the subject of drums - like I said above, program everything yourself for your own feel, or .rex a decent breakbeat for someone elses. Too much of the time, people will get, an Apache break for instance, then slick it up and quantize to fuck. Jeez, what makes the Apache sound good is the interplay between the congas [or bongos? correct me people?] and the drums. Fair enough, I might knock the down-beats to grid, but let the rest flow.

5/ a trick I learned from JD73 about bass-line programming... program you 'perfect one' in, bounce it out. then play start to finish with all your pushes, pulls, rests, runs, substitutions and your mistakes! bounce... then a third changing the filter cut-off, mod-wheel work, perhaps velocity sensitive LFO, bit of delay added here and there. then pull all three in and have a chop for best results.

6/ truly random? if you want to step further away into the world of the weird, is suggest building your own bits in Reaktor or MAX/MSP, the latter I'm useless with, so I'll stick to Reaktor... there's plenty of built in macro to get you started, and you can grab bits from their own stuff. It's a throb to start with, but once you understand the architecture, there's a sound NO-ONE else has [less you share it on their forum ;-) haha]

7/ record your own percussion - I might tighten up drums for maximum beef, but laying down your own woodblock, tambourine, shaker etc, gives your beats your own feel [percussion like the latter two can be a sod to program from steps, and using a loop introduces too much of a wrong thing IMO] ...and a taste of the room it was mixed in :-)

Okay, I'm running out of steam, and it's not like I do *all* of these on every tune. But the best results I've got with my stuff is where it's the sound of *me* not my plug-ins, logic, what-ever.

It's too easy to bring in that kick you use on everything, dump an apple loop or two in, albetonize the lot, use native synths with preset sounds blah blah blah. Yer, people do this, and if their programming is interesting enough, it doesn't matter right?

Who's to say. All I',m saying is push-the-fucking-envelope. If I get sent another progressive-house track with sample-pack loops UN-TOUCHED or some crappy dub-step with YET ANOTHER Native Instruments Massive patch [distorted notch filter ring any bells?]

Yer... should have backed this up with a screen-cast or audio examples, but I'm lazy.... maybe on the re-edit...

File sharing

I've been prompted to write something about the semi-controversial issue by a recent tweet I saw, Stephen Fry arguing against the government’s filesharing law.

What the government are trying to impose is ridiculous and does not tackle to the root of the problem. Hang on, is there a problem?

When I was young, you simply *had~* to buy CDs, there was no internet. I was there when Napster, Audio Galaxy, LimeWire, poisoned and all that lot were there... And I used them.

I downloaded live sets, rarities, dj mixes, remix, bootlegs, b-sides, acoustic version, cover versions, random songs and the lot... I didn't just rip an entire album, or albums worth, 'cos that's being tight.

Yes, I sent and received cheap shit mp3s, but at the same time, I bought 100s of CDs, I still bought vinyl, I am an iTunes store addict... I rarely file share now, only if I'm looking for something I've already paid for that I want without DRM [a bad idea btw guys!] or stuff I simply can't find.

The issue is, the record companies monopolised the price of CDs for TOO long... not only was the artists getting screwed but the consumer too... minidiscs were never going too take off... CD players were becoming a thing off the past.

So, instead of taking legal action, embrace this trend, allow free music. People like Si Begg, Radiohead and NIN have offered interesting ways of letting the consumer dictate how much they pay.

What I dislike, is how these pro-file sharing people suddenly think it's their rite of passage to steal... fuck sake guys... it may be readily available, and yer, we all do it [it's like running a red traffic light yer?] but you actually DON'T have a case for your argument...

Just 'cos everyone does it, does not make it legal, or morale. it is still stealing. Unfortunately, the only people who are against file sharing seems to be rich rock stars who've made MILLIONS [*cough* metallica *cough*] and are total spanners for kicking up a fuss.

I think most people now agree, if they file share a dong or two and like it, they'll probably go and buy it from somewhere [digital or physical...] If the argument had better representation than some twats throwing their toys out of their pram and massive corporate fat-cats, then some discourse could be done...

One thing is for sure... There's sod-all money in making music now. I hope file-sharing doesn’t cheapen the music industry forever, then it really will be big bands like U2 that suffer.

In conclusion, file sharing is bad, but technically so is wanking, but we all do it. c'mon people.

those against

a) don't fight what you can't control
b) don't criminalise stupid shit
c) think of other ways to make money
d) it hurts everyone, but the unsigned artists MORE, so put it in perspective

for those for

a) you totally have no ground to stand on
b) this is not some cultural movement

At a time when Brittan watches the Chilcot enquiry to determine the legality of our invasion of Iraq... there's more beef steaming nicely across the pond. Just quickly, though, on the Chilcot thingy... what seems to be happening is people are taking sides, Campbell has actually stuck by his very controversial involvement in the war. Fair enough, least he has more balls than Jack Straw, who not only *now* says it was an illegal war, but claims he could have halted it... well done Jack! [one of my least favored Labour politicians!]

Anyway, with the death of Chemical Ali, and the enquiry essentially being led by a pack of kittens with questions I think ITVs ‘Loose Women’ could better... the end of the whole Iraq saga seems to be over. Except for the people of Iraq... After all the cameras have left, they maintain the corrupt government with dodgy agenda’s, poor economy and re-building that will take centuries. Not to mention the heart-ache for the murdered civilians.

After-all; Sadam was trying to westernize Iraq, good thing or not, not my place to say. Yes he was was responsible for a genocide of Shi'ite and Kurds... but look him up. Before the corruption was a pan-Arabic innovator. He tried to do to Iraq what was happening to Iran before the revolution of 1979, but was a bit mental along the way. [I am in NO-WAY praising Sadam Hussein]

Woah... this isn't what I came here to talk about... Anyway. So, whilst we're forgetting about Iraq, the poor old people of Yemen may have an invasion on their hands... I'm not shit-stirring, but, all this talk of Yemen's oil drying out is bullshit. We may hide under the hood of climate change, but a large sector of the less-economically-developed world [or deal-spoilers as Ed Millaband would have them known *cough* Sudan, Cuba, China etc *cough*] and America themselves [still riddled with climate change deniers] needs oil. Our climate change efforts don ‘t really come into play for generations…

And oil is still plentiful. They reckon Libya has only realized 10% of it's Oil potential... Saudi and Qatari oil will run plentiful long after you and I are dead. This Yemeni oil-drought is spin.

So, is this perhaps why Obama suddenly is interested in building a US Air-Base on the lonely island of Socotra?

Without referring to it's wiki... Socotra is a small island off the coast of Somalia [our other great friends at the moment!] and Yemen. It broke off Pangaea a long time [I don't know how long] before the rest of the countries did. And it's protected by UNESCO for it's rare wildlife. They reckon it has something like 20,000 native species, found no-where else, and has some BIZAARE trees, planets, everything. They speak a dialect similar to Arabic and there's no public-transport. Google-image it.

What else is interesting is, that Russia [The USs old old friends] are building air-bases in Syria, Libya... and Yemen. Guess where in Yemen? Socotra... This stinks of the time the US build an air-base in Poland [I think?] and the Russian's got mega-pissed off.

This is about diplomacy and control over volatile land which is oil rich. Yemen pose no real terrorist threat no-more than Luxembourg does. You can be drowned in anti-Yemini spin all you like, by ours and US government-controlled media... but didn't all this happen before the war on terror in Iraq? A war, 10 or so years later, we're now classifying as potentially illegal? We still support Israel, we still occupy Afghanistan and we still want oil. A remedy for attracting beef.

Now, I'm not saying Yemen is going to be invaded...

There's also a possibility this Air Base is a nice little niche to keep a watchful eye on the bad-boys in Somalia...

To be honest - I think there was a distinct lack of big announcements to be made...

no hovercraft Moog, no laser guitars or computers than run on your own sense of self-satisfaction...

There were a few biggies, Nord, released their stage piano [which is the same size and same engine as their nord stage, why the fuck you'd bother is beyond me!] Nord Stage FTW everyday

Moog re-released their famous Taurus, with added usb jive and all that shit [but a sod to play, so I wouldn't bother!]

Ableton announced integration with Serato, released all the MAX/MSP plug-ins for live and released a new launch-pad... but nothing really really special... the serato thing let me down a wee bit... but cool none-the-less

Redmatica released an AWESOME off-line sampler... check their website for that [actually next level capabilities]

other than that, good old Electro Harmonix had a few bits, Sonnox and Waves did their usual ting, few random inventions [like fold-up piano, not rly all that good] and those people who did the fold-up hard were there...

PreSonus announced integration with SoundCloud, they now have a DAW with an export to SoundCloud function [expect Ableton and others to jump on this in-time for MusilkMesse I'd imagine]

I however, met David Smith [of Sequential Circuits] Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten and Zachery Vex [but I guess he *has* to be there!]

You may have caught Ithaca Trio opening for Vessels a few weeks ago, as part of our first Small Ideas show of the University year; and if you did miss them, then you should be kicking yourself repeatedly in the shin till it snaps in two. Ithaca Trio is the brainchild of Mr Ollie Thurley, a young man I have known for a few years, who’s musical expertise always manages to astound me, and he produced perhaps the best EP of 2009 (my band’s Shirley Bassey EP)….*cough, cough*….anyways, Ithaca Trio is the latest venture for Mr Thurley and it is something that I advise you all have a listen of, and his worriedaboutsatan remix is well worth hearing. Coming at you like Tim Hecker sitting in dark room, shoving Steve Reich, Bach, and Wu Tang samples through a loop pedal; Ithaca Trio are a band well worth giving your time to. I spoke to Ollie about his Ithaca project:

Jonny: So, explain the inspiration behind Ithaca Trio? What made it come about? And is the name a homage to Mogwai?

Ollie: Haha, nice! Not many people spot the Mogwai reference, thank you! Basically the name is part Mogwai influence, and part Shotgun from Resident Evil. When I’m trying to be arty though, I tell people it’s the mythical island from Homer’s Odyssey. The trio came about because, basically I’m a closet jazz-nerd (just a listener though, I’m a terrible player). Also, I thought more people would listen if they thought they were listening to three jazz-trained musicians, rather than one music geek. What made it come about? Musical maliciousness. When I lived with Will, I put a load of my drones and ambient stuff on a CD – he absolutely hated it… so I decided to keep doing it, and bullied him into helping me live.

Jonny: Explain your extremely complicated gear set-up, and do you think tonnes of gear is important? Or does it just look cool?

Ollie: Tonnes of gear a good thing? No, to be honest, my set up is far too convoluted and unnecessary at the moment. I’m going to start cutting back live, and limiting myself whilst writing I think. Basically, I have two people’s rigs for one person. The guitar half, is a parallel loop pedal system, routed through a DJ mixer. Essentially its Steve Reich’s phase recordings meets Brian Eno’s generative work… on a pedal board. Then the other half is a Laptop, and Roland sampler. The guitar (and whoever else is playing) gets routed into the Laptop, and into a bit of software called Penguin (shameless plug: you can get it from http://ithacatrio.wordpress.com) which does lots of super-fun glitchy things.

Jonny: Whats going on with the new album? A massive departure from the EP? What influenced the new recordings?

Ollie: We’ve got a mini-album (Tesla Verses The Night) coming out on Under the Spire Recordings early next year, which I’m really, really excited about. They’ve got some brilliant artists over there (Jasper TX, p jørgensen, Damian Valles…), so I’m genuinely honoured Chris likes and is releasing this next project.

After that, I’m not really sure to be perfectly honest. We’ve just started recording a new full-length album this week, its all up in the air currently. I think it’s going to be pretty different from anything I’ve tried before, but how different I don’t know yet. The first release was all slow manipulations of guitar. The second was acoustic-guitar based, and the mini-album is a really organic recording. The album is stepping out of the softness of a lot of the earlier works and getting a bit atonal. I think I’m listening to too much Animal Collective and Love Supreme-era Coltrane at the moment really.

Jonny: Whats the future for Ithaca? More shows? More production stuff for you Mr Thurley?

Ollie: I’m planning the standard Rock and Roll package I think; drug-addiction, decent to obscure madness, hiatus, royalty lawsuits, comeback tour, greatest hits album… Seriously though? Well, we’re supporting Library Tapes on January 30th which is exciting. Forest of Sound have secured the St. Margaret of Antioch Church, Leeds which is an awesome building and sadly really underused for gigs. After that? Just working on the next album and hopefully a few special studio/live collaborations and some more remixes. Unfortunately, I’m not really organized enough to plan that far ahead after that, so we’ll see what turns up.

Jonny: If you could work with any musician who would it be and why?

Ollie: Hmm… not sure? PartWildHorsesManeOnBothSides, because they’re fucking incredible, Seb Rochford from Polar Bear, or Madlib. Seb has awesome hair, but probably Madlib. The guy apparently owns four tonnes of vinyl and blends Hip-Hop sensibility with everything from 80’s prog-rock to 60’s modal-jazz, but I wonder what he would do with ambient music. He has so many collaborations/alter-ego’s I’m sure he could handle a little drone project. Madaca? Ithalib? Okay, maybe not.

Jonny: Cheddar or Brie?

Ollie: Cheddar, but it has to be a really mature one. I’m a sucker for Cathedral City…

Jonny: Chequered or spotted trousers?

Ollie: Chequered!

Jonny: North or South?

Ollie: South. You dirty northerners…

Jonny: Sandwiches or baguettes?

Ollie: Vive la baguette!

Jonny: Juice or Squash?

Ollie: Juice.

Ollie: Liquid Swords is one of my favorite Wu side-projects, but mate… it’s all about RZA & Meth!

Jonny: Playing Live or being in the Studio?

Ollie: Erm, studio I think. There is a lot more time and choice in the studio. I can get more people involved, more processing, more tender love and affection, that sort of stuff. I just feel a lot more comfortable writing and trying new things out in the studio than doing it live – I get more chance to spread out when nobody is listening. Plus, in the studio, I can choose what I let people hear after I’m done – at the moment, for every minute of Ithaca Trio stuff available online, I’ve got four minutes sat on my hard-drive that nobody else gets to hear.

Jonny: Omelettes or scrambled eggs?

Ollie: I make a mean omelette.

Something very close to my heart is the overdraft charges case that's been running. I am personally 'owed' a small fortune, that would be damned helpful, so I've been following this case a bit.

There was a quote that from the hearing that shocked me a bit [if I can find it]

"I do not consider that the payments are made in exchange for the whole package of services supplied by the bank when it is operating a current account. Secondly, I do not consider that the payments are the price or remuneration for those services. The payments would not be so recognised by the typical customer when he opens a current account with a bank, and they are not generally so presented by the banks in their terms or other documentation"

I mean after the blatant bonus scandal over publicly owned banks paying more in bonuses to their, frankly, inept staff, amounting to something like $33 billion [I can't find a source with the UK sum in such a hurry]

Now, I'm no economics analyst, but I'm sure if you're to take the sum of the tax bail-out used to rescue banks which are 'too big too fail' [x] and add the overdraft fees 'owed' to people [I say owed in inverted comers as actually they are technically agreed terms, but the argument here is fairness, not a technicality on weather or not it's allowed] [y] you get [z].

Now, Z still pails into insignificance compared to the bonuses paid in this country, which, so far as I'm aware, I, as a tax-payer, was not consulted on. I must have missed the memo requesting my permission for the go-ahead on some un-justly rewarded bonuses.

They should be kept for out-standing performance, now re-packaging bad-debt and sub-prime mortgages, then selling it on so many times it snowballs, doesn't warrant out-standing performance in my eyes.

Western banking is based to risk-taking to the highest level, and this should not be rewarded [ESPECIALLY WHEN IT GOES WRONG!], not only are we [the UK tax-payer] 51%[?] share-holders of banks like RBS, so it was our money allocated on saving them, but the FSA allow ridiculous bonuses and then they twist the knife further by this overdraft charges claim going their way!

Grrr... hate to sound like a sun-reader! Rant over

Firstly, got to slate the Sun for blatent abuse of that woman's grief, and using it as a political wepon. Perhaps report some real issues and leave that stuff alone? Oh, how hypercritical of me...

So out to Alastar Campbell for running tings on This Week, and Will Self for Duppy-ing the Baroness on QT. Also Paxman grilled Imigration Minimister blah blah shade of grey man no-one knows.

Mandelson claims there's a deal between the Tories and the S[c]um, perhaps there was between the '97 Labour Gov and them too, so perhaps more hypocrasy [spelling... sorry]

the time is approaching when the next ep is gonna be out, it'll be on itunes store and physical copies available from the myspace

when i saw the above pic in yesterday's paper, i didn't fully understand the implications, this stunning pic of the great Chet Baker, and read the article, only to discover the great William Claxton had died aged 80.

july was busy one for us. how's everyone doing? i promised ollie i'd talk about current affairs so georgia/olympics/zanu pf/premiership season/credit crunch. few that's over

right at the end of june we had the art jam in hoxton... probably one the most enjoyable monday nights ever... some weird eclectic mix of bands [chalk, glue micro penis,people shouting down the mic will strumming bass guitars...drum machines, neon paint, hand stands and someone actually DJing off cassette tapes - out to PJ and duncan!]

most of the night was spent in primary school fashion doodling and drawing

the very next night we played down the proud galleries with the very talented enrico. thanx to the remedy lot for comin support. btw the new proud galleries is uuber swanky [more so than the last one!] but they've lost the giant chess board :-(

next we had some next gig at corss kings in king's cross... met that lovely chap derron brown and his brother... 10 bands, 5 poets and 5 djs... jus 2 stages... it actually worked! and wait for us to be back there in september with the one and only mozzy green

this club is the nicest we've seen in ages though, real up and coming and in a slick area of london... underground club, floor band area and bar, upstairs VIP and rooftop type conservatory... no shit!

so it's been a while since we've blogged and we're due one so...
where did we leave off?

after a lil break in febuary,march brought a sicklil' night in islington [just good music @ old queens head with a great solo artists nayfo] lovely lil venue. next we had our own night in the great and wonderful bishop's stortford

the night is called essence [expect another 3 this year... then who knows next year? u2 aint got nuthin on us... come get me bono] the night is a cross media party [visuals and music + bare alcohol] the night kicked off with the spores playing a dutty funk set with the original selecta tang playing either side of them, joined briefly by [myspace hoe] jmo for his second set [electro breaks nu rave] next up messengers showcased themselves. dave prozak threw down 45 mins of hiphop terror to prep for us then prozak and 2snide finished the night off with their harmitage shanks dubstep takeover

we tried to cram as many genres in a possible and luckily [for us!] stortford seemed to feel it. a big thanks goes out to everyone who came, jack smash for the lifts, blake for the stylus, jmo for the decks, geoff and nigel for jus being well handy, prozak and 2snide for smashing it, all the bands and DJs, tim [othergreenman] bad man sounds and ur a true gent, mike and nicky for the painstaking work on their visuals, all essence crew [mike nicky mfon me] leeroy for the youtube vid, maxwell and rosie for driving the rig, matt patchwork for supplying the rig and surprising everyone with his beatboxing! anyone else i forgot? oops no

march has been hectic too, we kicked off with remedy [love dem remedy boys... and girls!] cheers for the opp ash! super soul brother dell smashed it, kaana and the remedies were on form too [cept their drummer, he's a prick] then we had ginglik were we met the nicest bunch of people!

next week we had kentish town, really cool night called replay live, played with some tight bands, shouts go out to johnny replay, the film crew, magda sinit [sweet stuff] and wormfood [badmen... watch this space] the next night we played back in our 2nd home watford town. heavy night haha. shouts to mr morestyles, melody, chalky, b4w [i found ya!] the graf dude, sweet laredo and anyone else!

on the 17th we had holloway rd ldn met uni su bar [long name] shouts to rishi, and todla t... hang on... he flopped. long. moving on we dun a few low key, host [charidy for peter o'neill] and emma and oliva's party [anyone who didn't go missed me in a dappa looking outfit]

next week we have barfly batte of te bands on thursday [hope to see any cambridge crew down there!] playing with cougars, keltrix and the winter kings. friday we got biggun down at the 333 in hoxton [5 mins from liverpool st station] followed by A.R.U sports ball [messy night if i remember the las one!] then sunday we back in shoreditch [details on our gig list]

Recently we've been gigging in and around London, with two shows at Nottinghill's prestigious Arts club, Plan B in Brixton and Cargo.

Steve plus guests, a certain someone who was not there in actuality but was in spirit [no, not God] all staff at Flutes, Faye, Lloyd, Ollie and his misses, Mrs Charhin, Bamboo Loud crew, Onion Man, Alena and Daryl [Gash mate what happened to you?] also magical Joe and misses - where were you? missed out on a once a year thing. Tut.

Minor Details

OK OK.....

2007 has opened up with a BANG!!

So far…. a handful of live shows, photoshoots, meetings, writing new material…… and completing the EP…..

STILL, there's more to come – we are currently finalising details for the EP promo party/s…with it looking as though there will be 1 taking place at a venue in London & another at a venue in/around Bishops Stortford in Mid Spring.

We are also in the process of pressing a limited number of promo EP's – that will be available at these live shows.

As soon as we have confirmed dates & venues we will be posting them up on our myspace.

In the meantime we will be playing a set at: The Good Ship, Kilburn, NW London on Friday 9^th March – more details on this will be up on our myspace soon.

so.......The first official J-Treole EP is complete (minus fine tuning). It has deftly been named the 'Minor Details EP'

....whilst the 'fine tuning' takes place, we will be rotating tracks taken from the EP on our page & all feedback is appreciated…!

yer so we played at 'the rinse' last friday (rhodes centre bishops stortford thanx max) set order ran like this:

basicly we were suposed to play with a DJ called j-mode (doing some turntabilism, mfon b2b max etc) but he never showed so we blagged a few jams and i duno how they went down... the sound guys proper fucked up too, loadsa feedback and shitty sound, but it's all experience

we're next at the three colts in stansted on the 26th of may, suypporting the tymes. go there, get startled. blap

j-treole are also under new managment: the furious D 9daryle bar of circle line/jokers wild/dirty paris fame) is stepping up to the challenge of getting our asses organised... a new era in j-treole|? we hope so - watch this space heads.

just had a sketchy dream

okay, so it's tuesday night, and i decided to 'old man nap' as gash calls it, after myself and buddle were talking about sleep paralasys and lucid dreaming all day (sp.)

so this dream

for some reason, seb myself and tim were driving back from newport areas, and we were in tim's car (though seb was driving) i don't know what we were doing, but i remeber something about getting a present for someone, and i remeber herbz was on, cos as we enetered ugly, i joked about hearing a gabba kick, but as we drove through, across from where the village hall was was a huge militery base (area 51 stylee) areoplanes, helicopters, silos and everything

the whole place was changed, i remeber i was just about to throw the remains of a costa sandwich out the window, and we were signaled to pull over by some dude (incidently he was eating a brie grape and chicken costa sandwich) we drove past, but some dude with a megaphone signaled for us to do a u-turn in the village hall, we did so... all a little worried

initially i thought we'd been busted cos i was gona chuck the sandwich out the window, then i realised seb was driving tim's car, but we got out of the car and went into the village hall, were a few people were scattered about looking distressed.

all i could hear was a lots of people all in unison counting down from 47 and then once they reached 1 they started again. i have no idea why.

i saw this middle aged woman, looking particually distressed. i was getting vexed as we were being detained for reasons unknown to me, and i'm a cocky kinda person. we got talking and i wa sugesting the people outside were counting down from 47 then one of them died (sorta like the film logan's run ish)

she indicated for me to look around and i saw families and young pepople etc, i realised my speculation was doing nohting for morale. she said she tried to go out there, but she felt although someone was stopping her, because she wasn't ready. she said something about god.

as far as i can remeber i thought about them not letting her outside. thinking what i must take (mentally aND spiritually) to see what ever it is that was happening out there, it was weird.

the only details i've missed out were that the village hall was sort of like the post office, and there was a kiosk to my left, though this was occupied by the people who'd pulled us over and stuff... anyway this has no relevence

then i woke up cos i had a phone call.

anyway that's my dream! buddle and i discussed dream recall today, so this is my dream recall!

secret gig

thanks again to people who turned up! woo! we were okay... first few songs were good then we kinda expected to fuck off but had to play on... so we were unreheresed but okay.

got another gig coming up. 2nd march at nusha (right next door to the junction in cambridge) same rules apply, if you're intending not to go, don't say 'uh... yer i will go' then txt me on the day and say you can't, cos this is bullshit and many people did it to me.

if you genuinlly dont want go/cant come etc PLEASE JUST SAY SO! don't pretend like u can

a..nyway enough ranting. it'll be good, we're on from 9 - 12 and there's no entrance fee, also drinks are cheaper than la raza! (1.50/bottle) and selected cocktails will be reduced during happy hour.

be there! half term next week... woo! time to do work
