THE FUTURE OF JAZZ [CIRCA 1950]
awesome video
Not a lot of people know, that this guy [George Russell] actually inspired the greatest selling jazz album ever. His Lydian chromatic concept was read by Miles Davis [and others] after he'd ventured into his cool works. Jazz was changing from the days of simple changes where you'd improvise over certain chords [I VI ii V, or the likes]
Be-bop saw heavy extensions and alterations, with 'hot' syncopated comping and vastly dramatic scalic weavery by the solo-ists and composers. Cool saw the introduction of a softer side, exploring the sonority of instruments.
It was George Russell's book though, started Modal Jazz, which produced the best selling Jazz album of all time, Miles Davis' 'kind of blue'. The theory [briefly[ explores the conept of soloing with scales [horizontally] rather than dictated by changes [vertically] a concept previously not explored.
Miles David put together a band for a short session, only showing the musicians, sometimes, fragments of scales, no changes, not much direction. Bill Evan’s rich chordal explorations in Blue in Green, his quatral harmonies in So What [copied by everyone since] and beautiful floaty flamenco sketches, coupled with Miles’ gliding melodies, makes a timeless album.
This was a great band, and without the concept they would have produced an amazing album, but what is funny, is that it was a theoretical concept, that inspired Miles to gather these musicians. Only a young Coltrane, could have began to match Miles.
In short, Miles Davis has been there for the middle of be-bop, helped re-invent cool from a west-coast white thang, to a widely accepted, well documented mile-stone [no pun intended!] in jazz. He helped create modal, was a forefront of electric jazz fusion, and his last album was a venture into hip-hop when he died.
Take a moment to check his back catalogue
I am going to blog more Jazz [videos, modern and old, introspect, theories and the like] as I've been of the boil for a bit. This is a fitting start to it.

Who remembers what they did mellenium? Yer...
So next year we're gonna get back on the giggin after a slightly dry 2009. We worked so hard finishing Three Point One Four and starting the next , as yet, un-named EP, that we did few gigs.
Anyway, bla, next year we're gonna get back on it, re-take East London and try get a few more uni citys under our belts.
The string recording never happned 'cos of diminished numbers, in-fact alot of recording didn't happen 'cos it was just too busy a month with Xmas.
But next year we got
Simon Panrucker - Saxes
Ollie Thurley - Guitars
Adrian from Remedy - Guitars
Andy from Remedy - Trumpet
Cara Winter - Vocals
Alice o'Leary, Anil Joshi, Nicola Hutchinson and Anna Scoot - Strings
Perhaps some more too...?
Anyway, 'nuff for now

big week
Firstly, got to slate the Sun for blatent abuse of that woman's grief, and using it as a political wepon. Perhaps report some real issues and leave that stuff alone? Oh, how hypercritical of me...
So out to Alastar Campbell for running tings on This Week, and Will Self for Duppy-ing the Baroness on QT. Also Paxman grilled Imigration Minimister blah blah shade of grey man no-one knows.
Mandelson claims there's a deal between the Tories and the S[c]um, perhaps there was between the '97 Labour Gov and them too, so perhaps more hypocrasy [spelling... sorry]
Better not get this published in the Sun otherwise I'll be a total-bastard.
Phew
Musically we're prepping for Bristol gig Fri week

Category: Art and Photography RIP Willian Claxton [mostly lifted from the Gurdian's G2 section 15th oct] when i saw the above pic in yesterday's paper, i didn't fully understand the implications, this stunning pic of the great Chet Baker, and read the article, only to discover the great William Claxton had died aged 80. '"He loved the camera, gave himself to it," Claxton said, and his photos made Baker the white poster boy of cool jazz: pouting in the arms of beautiful women, but always with that cowboy thing, the middle-distance look in his eyes.' 'Thelonious Monk looms into focus with the room receding and converging on him as if some lop-sided gravity is at work. As Bill Evans hunches over the keyboard there is so little to be seen - ear, hair, neck, a glimpse of spectacles - that he shouldn't be recognisable but, like the lightest touch of his fingers on the keys, these few details are enough to identify him immediately and reveal the admonition at the heart of his technique: it takes more strength to caress the keys that to pound them' 'Claxton's people are rarely crowded by the picture frame. (In the case of Ray Charles, the tight framing struggles to contain the intensely orchestrated energy of the playing.)' '...Here is Elvin Jones. That's right, Elvin Jones, Coltrane's right- (and left!) hand man, looking as approachable as anyone in the street, as ordinary as an old sweater. That's Claxton in a nutshell: everyday greatness and a charged sense of the ordinary in the same instant.' here are some other greats by Claxton: and to close, the definitive quote from the article 'The transformation of suffering into beauty is a romantic commonplace but Claxton's unashamed lyricism is one of his - and Pepper's - strengths.'
